Household emergencies or disasters are not that uncommon. From something as simple as getting locked out to something more extreme like a fire or a flood, here are some of the most common household disasters.
Natural disasters can't be stopped, but you can be prepared for them. Same goes for typical home "disasters," it's all about being prepared and knowing what to do. The following list will tell you about some of the most common household emergencies and what you can do to prevent and fix them.
Power Blackout
Technically it’s still summer, so a blackout and the heat are not something anyone wants or needs. Power failures are pretty common and usually caused by the weather. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to prevent them, but you can be prepared since you don’t know how long the blackout will last. First things first, find any possible alternative light sources: candles, flashlights, emergency lights, etc. Then you should unplug or turn off any electronics that were in use before the light went out. If the power has been out for a while and your fridge starts to smell funky, throw away whatever is causing that smell.
You must be
prepared for any natural disasters, including a blackout. If possible, buy a generator, create a family
emergency plan, so everyone knows what to do, have an exit plan too. Stock up on canned foods, bottled water, batteries, and radio. In the case of any emergency, you should always have cash at hand. Lastly, find something to entertain yourselves while you wait for the power to come back on.
Blocked Drains, Toilet, or Pipes
Who hasn’t had to deal with a clogged drain? It’s absolutely annoying, not to mention it can lead to a potential flood or develop bad smells. Blocked drains happen because of what you’re putting in there. For instance, toilets are designed only to take what comes out of your body…and toilet paper, so you shouldn’t throw anything else inside. Shower drains usually get clogged because of excessive hair. All you need to do to unclog shower drain is to unscrew the drain cap and pull the hair out…it might be a little gross. There are plenty of ways you can
fix a blocked drain on your own, but just in case the job gets tough, you can call in an expert to help you out

Gas Leak
Gas leaks can be hazardous. A mere spark or flame in an enclosed area can cause a fire or an explosion. If you even get a whiff of gas smell or suspect there might be a gas leak you need to follow these steps. Never light up any matches or cigarettes, don’t switch on or off any electronics, turn off the gas supply, open all doors and windows to let air in, contact an expert to repair the leak and ensure you can go back into the room. Floods
There are plenty of ways in which your house can get flooded, even if it’s a small flood. From an overflowing washing machine to a forgotten open faucet, or a plumbing malfunction, floods are not something you want to deal with. Firstly, be sure to wear safe, rubbed-soled shoes. Try to shut off electricity at the mains, but if you can't, you should call emergency services and a plumber to help you deal with the source of the problem. Make sure there aren’t any plugs and wires anywhere near the water, they are hazards. Once the of the flood has been dealt with, let as much possible fresh air circulate the area, you can use some fans if necessary to dry the area. You can hire a carpet cleaner to clean and dry your damaged carpets, so they don’t end up smelly. Remember
Daniel’s DKI can help you with your flood problem before it turns into a
mold and mildew situation (they can help out with that too).
Getting Locked Out
It’s pretty common (and embarrassing to admit) to get locked out of our house. Whether it is because you forgot or lost your keys or someone accidentally locked you outside, it happens more than we care to admit. You should always keep a spare key hidden somewhere outside. Stash your key under a fake rock, in your school or work bag, somewhere in your car, or somewhere completely unexpected. You can also give a spare key to your most trusted neighbor, just don’t wake them up at 3 a.m. to get it.
